With the direction of the President and Board of Trustees, the Community Engagement and Marketing Coordinator VISTA will develop volunteer-based projects centered on activities that grow membership and the capacity of Lahontan Audubon Society (LAS) as a whole by leveraging community members to assist with LAS programs. This person will manage volunteers through the recruitment process and provide volunteer trainings, as well as expand opportunities for volunteer engagement and other outreach events.

This VISTA will serve as the primary contact for all LAS volunteers and will be responsible for communicating and regularly engaging with volunteers to improve volunteer recruitment, training, management, and retention. The Community Engagement and Marketing Coordinator VISTA will develop a marketing and outreach plan that enhances the advertising and outreach strategies used to promote LAS programs and events via social media, PR, and streamlined website design.

AmeriCorps Members will serve as Success Mentors providing academic and social-emotional supports to K-5 students at one of 14 elementary schools. Members will work with students both during the school day and in after-school programming. Members will provide in-class support, ensure students receive the individualized instruction when needed, and provide homework assistance both during and after-school. Required hours are five days a week and approximately 22.5 - 30 hours per week (depending on the position accepted). While the majority of service hours are completed onsite during school hours, members will engage in additional professional and community development meetings and/or projects, which may take place during evening or weekend hours.

Since 1942, United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) strives to link the community’s will and resources to improve lives. Beginning in 2014, UWNNS identified a key need to address early childhood literacy and focused their primary efforts towards it. The Education and Curriculum Coordinator VISTA serves to enhance the implementation of UWNNS’s United Readers program and Community Impact initiatives. These programs are focused on children ages zero to five preparing for school, as well as kindergarten through third grade children. The VISTA will accumulate educational resources, data, and implement tracking systems to ensure the programs start with the utmost effectiveness and longevity. These programs will ensure children are better equipped to be at grade level reading proficiency. Children’s proficiency in reading by third grade has a strong correlation to high school graduation rates, which is a key factor in quality of life and the cycle of poverty.
