Throughout our history, Nevada Volunteers has helped members provide more than 27.5 million hours of service, and utilized more than $13.6 million in education awards to pay college tuition and/or pay down student loans.

1993–1996

A Volunteer Umbrella

The National and Community Service Trust Act is signed into law, centralizing all domestic community service programs under a new Corporation for National and Community Services. The Corporation creates AmeriCorps by combining national service programs:

Nevada Governor Bob Miller establishes an advisory commission and authorizes the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) to house the commission. The commission begins selecting and funding AmeriCorps programs that address locally-identified needs and the state’s priorities for service.

1997–1998

Streamlining

The commission becomes an independent nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation.

1998–2007

Watch Us Grow

  • Annual funding increases to more than $2.9 million and our programs expand.
  • We help more than 2,000 AmeriCorps members serve their communities in 15 programs around Nevada.
  • In 2007, Nevada AmeriCorps programs administered by the Commission contribute more than 25,000 hours of service and recruit more than 3,300 community volunteers who give more than 23,000 more hours of service.

2008-2012

A New Name, A Bigger Mission, and A New Home

The Commission announces a broadening of our mission and a new name—Nevada Volunteers—that captures our expanded vision:

  • To build a collaborative statewide infrastructure that supports existing volunteer efforts across the state;
  • To increase and improve volunteer opportunities; and
  • To improve volunteer management and retention
  • We created Nevada’s first online volunteer matching system to connect volunteers with unmet needs in their communities.
  • We’ve created a Blog, Listserv and Facebook to better connect with our partners in service.

2013

Some Big Successes, and More To Come!

  • We expand AmeriCorps State to 10 programs and more than $2.3 million in AmeriCorps funding reaching countless Nevadan residents.
  • We assemble the largest portfolio in the commission’s 20-year history. Governor Brian Sandoval includes Nevada Volunteers’ administrative match as a permanent line item in the state’s budget.
  • VolunteerMatch announces that Nevada is the fastest growing state on the Internet’s largest volunteer management website, and that the City of Las Vegas is No. 10 in the nation.

2014

Strengthening Nonprofit Infrastructure Statewide

Nevada Volunteers becomes the designated Service Enterprise Hub in Nevada and begins training nonprofit organizations in the Service Enterprise Model to build their capacity and increase their ROVI (Return on Volunteer Investment)
