Ways to help | Special ProjectsSpecial Projects Volunteers participate in occasional activities fitting specific needs. Project examples include, but are not limited to, running errands, graphic design, photography, sewing, poster creation, letter writing for Wish Kids and scrapbook design. If you’ve mastered the art of assembling shelves, capturing the perfect moment on your camera, or have a knack for organizing, our staff would love it if you’d lend your talents! The Special Projects role is an umbrella for many unique ways to get involved.Volunteer TrainerVolunteer trainers help acclimate new volunteers to the Make-A-Wish organization and the various volunteer roles within Make-A-Wish. They thoroughly prepare volunteers for the work they’ll be doing so they can confidently move forward with their roles.Wish Story WriterWish story writers use their creative writing skills to put the impact of a wish into words. Provided with details about the wish child, their medical journey, their wish, and the ‘why’ of the wish, wish story writers use The Guide to Writing a Wish Story to compile the story before and after the wish. Wish stories are used before the wish to share with the community and request donations for the wish. Completed post wish stories are used to share the power of a wish with the community through various outlets.Wish Discovery VolunteerThe Wish Discovery Volunteer has the opportunity to help a child determine his or her one true wish. This is one of the most emotionally demanding volunteer positions at Make-A-Wish, but also the most rewarding. Wish Discovery Volunteers work in pairs. They meet with the Wish Child and his or her family, communicate the child’s wish to the office, and submit completed paperwork and all required photos to staff within a week of the wish being determined.Junior VolunteersJunior Volunteers assist the staff with specific needs. Examples include, but are not limited to, photography, taking inventory, poster creation, letter writing for Wish Kids, scrapbook design, binder assembly, special events, speaking engagements, and participating in our Kids for Wish Kids program. We love Junior Volunteers and are always open to new ideas to encourage excitement for volunteering and supporting their community. Junior Volunteers under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent for volunteer assignments in our office.Wish DesignerWish Designers work with a Wish Coordinator on staff to plan, create, and host Wish Reveals. Wish Designers may also assist staff with local Wishes such as shopping sprees, room makeovers, etc. You will be partnered with another Wish Designer for each Wish Reveal or Local Wish experience.Data SpecialistData Specialists provide invaluable support to our employees in the office. Though some tasks are time sensitive, we are happy to coordinate a schedule that maximizes your experience and adheres to your availability. Data Specialists assist with data entry into our Raiser’s Edge database program and Microsoft Office programs.Wish ExpertTaking a wish to the next level requires community involvement and resources. As a Wish Expert, you receive occasional emails from the Make-A-Wish staff indicating a specific request to make a Wish Child’s experience even more special. This volunteer opportunity is great if you find yourself saying, “I know people.” Wish Experts enjoy playing matchmaker by connecting chapter staff to the appropriate experts and facilitating an introduction. These experts could be friends of yours, community leaders that you know, or businesses that you think would be excited to lend their expertise to a wish.Airport GreetersAirport Greeters welcome visiting Wish Children and their families to Las Vegas for their wish of a lifetime! Volunteers with flexible schedules provide an incredible service by greeting wish families at the airport, assisting with baggage, guiding them to car rental/shuttle/taxi and providing directions. Airport greeting is a quick and easy way to connect with the Make-A-Wish mission and meet wish families from all over the world! (Volunteers are never to drive the family.)Translator/InterpreterAs a Translator/Interpreter, you will facilitate wish experiences for non-English speaking families. Because of you, Wish Children and their families are able to communicate with our office and volunteers. This rewarding position is a direct line to making wishes come true! Translators have the option of becoming fully trained Wish Discovery Volunteers or Wish Designers, or they may provide short-term support on an as-needed basis. We have a particularly high need for Spanish-speaking volunteers.AmbassadorAmbassadors represent Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada at various community events to share information regarding our national and local history, our mission, how to refer a child, and how the audience can get involved with our chapter. Ambassadors may be invited to speak with service organizations, corporations, and schools and will know in advance what is required for each presentation. As an Ambassador of Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada, you will educate audiences on the healing power of a wish!Office VolunteerOffice volunteers provide invaluable support to our employees in the office. Though some tasks are time sensitive, we are happy to coordinate a schedule that maximizes your experience and adheres to your availability. Office Volunteers assist with phone call management, greeting our guests, and much more!Event VolunteersEvent Volunteers assist with interactive events such as participating as a Make-A-Wish representative at community events, fundraisers, and family activities hosted by the Southern Nevada Chapter. Event Volunteers may be asked to assist with events organized by external groups to benefit the Southern Nevada Chapter. Event Volunteers have the opportunity to serve on event planning committees and assist on the day of the event. Being an Event Volunteer is a fun way to interact and network with our community!Medical Outreach AmbassadorAmbassadors spread awareness about Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada by reaching out to new and existing medical contacts through discovery calls and hospital/practice visits. They educate medical professionals about qualifying medical criteria for wishes and address misconceptions. They fulfill medical stewardship needs. They participate in health fairs and attend events put on by our nonprofit partners (examples: medical seminars, community and internal events, and more).Celebrity HostWhen a child wishes to meet a celebrity, a Celebrity Host serves as a liaison between the wish family, Make-A-Wish and the celebrity by accompanying the family during the wish experience and handling day-of-wish details. This individual will interact with the wish family, celebrity handlers and the celebrities themselves, as well as troubleshoot and assist the family with any special requests that may arise. A celebrity host will also document the wish experience by providing a written wish report describing the wish day experience.Welcome CallerA Welcome Caller acquaints new wish families with the Make-A-Wish mission, impact and wish granting process. Welcome Callers facilitate 30-45 minute phone orientations with all legal guardians in a distraction-free environment. |

How you help | Tens of thousands of volunteers, donors and supporters advance the Make-A-Wish® Southern Nevada vision to grant the wish of every child diagnosed with a critical illness. |

About us | Research shows children who have wishes granted build the physical and emotional strength needed to fight a critical illness. Founded in 1996, Make-A-Wish® Southern Nevada has granted over 1,900 wishes to children in Clark, Esmeralda, Lincoln and Nye counties. Additionally, each year the chapter hosts nearly 40 children from other states and countries who wish to visit Las Vegas or meet celebrities performing in Las Vegas. That means our chapter is involved in granting a wish nearly every other day, and we do it with a small and committed staff as well as the collective strength of over 400 volunteers to fulfill our mission. |
