Our missionSpread the Word Nevada is dedicated to advancing childhood literacy within low-income communities by changing lives one book at a time.
Our boardProvide governance to Spread the Word Nevada, Inc. (“STWN”) and represent it to the community.Characteristics of the Ideal Board Member:

PositionThe board member responsible for marketing brings to the organization deep and broad experience in the oversight of marketing that produce immediate and direct results for our bottom line. This board member should both be able to roll up their sleeves, but also is able to see the big picture of the impact of marketing.

Financial/Talent Commitment:

Make a meaningful personal financial commitment of a minimum of $1000 annually to STWN and bring some special talent, skill, knowledge, contact or other contribution to further the aims of STWN.  “Give or Get" at least one table sponsorship for the annual Storybook Gala.Responsibilities:
  • Regularly attend and participate in all board meetings.  If unable to attend board meeting, obtain Chairman approval prior to meeting.
  • Participate fully in board committees, as assigned, which includes attending committee meetings, reading the materials ahead of time, being prepared to discuss the issues at hand, and staying informed of committee matters.
  • Help shape and/or support the vision behind STWN’s mission, make decisions about program directions, and take part in long-range planning.
  • Serve as a facilitator for STWN, providing support to staff and other board members.
  • Advocate on behalf of STWN, including promoting the views of STWN in order to secure funding and other support for STWN.
  • Annually review and approve STWN’s budget and plans for funding its programs.
  • Assess the environment and make recommendations for STWN’s continued success.
  • Approve and abide by policies.
  • Hire, supervise, appraise, advise, and support STWN’s Executive Director.
  • Review the results achieved by management and the Board as compared with STWN’s annual and long-range goals.
  • Be adequately informed of the activities and operations of STWN.
  • Ascertain that management has established appropriate policies to define and identify conflicts of interest throughout STWN, and is diligently administering and enforcing those policies.
  • Attend THREE STWN special events annually, including the Storybook Gala, school adoption ceremonies, and/or donor, partnership or volunteer appreciation events. Wherever possible, bring potential donors to such events so they can witness STWN's work in the community first hand.
  • Assist with donor development and provide names of potential donors to populate STWN's donor database.
  • At least once a week, think about STWN and specifically what such board member can do that week to serve STWN.
