Board Member – Governance

Our missionNevada Outdoor School inspires exploration of the natural world, responsible stewardship of our habitat and dedication to community.
Our boardNevada Outdoor School (NOS) is a 19 year old 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization based out of Winnemucca and Elko, Nevada.  Our mission is to inspire exploration of the natural world, responsible stewardship to habitat and dedication to community.  Our main goal is to influence positive outdoor behavior by providing people the motivation, knowledge and skills to practice responsible outdoor recreation.  NOS focuses in the areas of Youth Development,  Training (Outdoor Ethics trainings and Outdoor Skills courses) and a Healthy Community.   We operate on an annual budget of about $700,000.
PositionNevada Outdoor School needs assistance with board recruitment and engagement.  A renewed sense of commitment and program participation is needed in the 19 year old outdoor education nonprofit from someone other than the Executive Director.Board meetings are also currently planned and facilitated by the Executive Director which we would like to change.

DonationWe strive for 100% board giving, but have no strict guidelines around financial contributions.
RequirementsCurrently we have 2 open positions on our 7 member Board of Directors.  Accounting oversight, legal representation, off road recreation, hunting and wildlife conservation, and physical or earth science are areas where we do not have good representation at this time.Our most recent 3 year  (2021 - 2024) strategic plan outlines 3 main goals for our board and staff to accomplish.1 - Develop effective communication strategies.2 - Increase our capacity to fulfill the demands of our mission.3 - Build programs and expand services with revenue generating programs.The Board of Directors meets every other month for about 2 hours either in person or by video, for a total of 12 - 15 hours annually.We have 2 - 3 major, full day long fundraisers each year and board participation at these fundraisers  is required either in Winnemucca or Elko for a total of 3 - 5 full 8 - 10 hour days.    
On-boardingOnboarding is done through an introduction at a regularly scheduled board meeting, Executive Director and Board member reviewal of qualifications and reason for interest in Nevada Outdoor School is discussed.Board President and Executive Director meet with interested person to evaluate fit for organization before they attend their first board meeting.Current board members then decide to invite potential applicant to attend NOS events and then to vote onto the board.
