2012 Fall Restoration Team Member

August 20, 2012 – November 15, 2012

Spend your fall working and camping outside at some of Nevada’s premier natural areas. Serve alongside volunteers from across the country while making a lasting contribution to Nevada’s natural heritage. Gain valuable field experience while working on habitat improvement, restoration, and recreation projects with the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Nevada Division of Forestry. Projects may include trail construction and maintenance, hazardous fuels reduction, and habitat restoration.

Compensation: This is an AmeriCorps position and candidates will receive a living stipend of $3,500 for the fall. This is not an hourly wage or a salary and is paid to members bi-monthly throughout their term of service. Upon completion of AmeriCorps service members shall receive an additional education award in the amount of $1,468 that can be used for paying off student loans, or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college.

Projects: Work on conservation projects like trail construction and maintenance, hazardous fuels reduction, and habitat restoration.

Duties:

  • Percentage of time spent on lifting and carrying (70%); traveling (20%); and hiking (10%)
  • Lift 25lbs continuously and 50lbs occasionally
  • Maintaining a positive and professional attitude at all time while providing service
  • Communicating with agency project staff
  • Complying with both production and quality work standards established by Nevada Conservation Corps administration, crew supervisors, and project partners
  • Contributing to basic duties at the campsite including cooking, cleaning, and organizing crew equipment
  • Show respect when interacting with other members, leaders, staff, project sponsors, and community members
  • Participate in in-field education sessions

Work Schedule:

Crew members serve in the field on either a 4 Day-On, 3 Day-Off or 8 Day-On, 6 Day-Off schedule.

Training: Members will participate in orientation from August 20, 2012 to August 24, 2012, where they will receive training in technical skills related to their crew. Members will also be trained in leave-no-trace ethics and CPR/First Adi.

Possible project site locations include Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, Spring Mountains NRA, Mt. Rose Wilderness Area, Carson City, Nevada, or Ely, Nevada. The location of service will depend on which regional office member is assigned to for during the term of service. Restoration crews will deploy from either the Reno or Las Vegas Field station depending on which project the member is assigned to for the session.

Qualifications: To qualify, one must be over 18 years of age and a United States citizen that has received a high school diploma or GED. All offers of service are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check. Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two full-time education awards).

2012-2013 Year-Round Crew Member

Spend a year working and camping at some of Nevada’s premier natural areas. Serve alongside volunteers from across the country while making a lasting contribution to Nevada’s natural heritage. Gain valuable field experience while working on habitat improvement, restoration, and recreation projects with the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and local and state agencies. Provide national service with your environmental restoration efforts and serve all over the state in a diverse and beautiful array of desert, mountain, and alpine habitats.

Compensation: This is an AmeriCorps volunteer position, and candidates will receive a living stipend of $14,000 for the year. This is not an hourly wage or salary position is paid to members bi-weekly throughout the entire year to assist with living expenses. Upon completion of an AmeriCorps national service contract, members shall receive an additional education award in the amount of $5,550 that can be used for paying off student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college. Health insurance benefits are provided.

Conservation projects can included trail construction and maintenance; exotic and invasive species removal; hazardous fuels reduction; habitat restoration; riparian restoration; illegal road decommissioning; and/or fence construction or decommissioning.

Qualifications: To qualify, one must be over 17 years of age and a United States citizen that has received a high school diploma or GED. All offers of service are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check. Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two full-time education awards).

Essential Duties:

  • Percentage of time: Lifting and carrying (70%); traveling (20%); and hiking (10%)
  • Lift 25lbs continuously and 50lbs occasionally
  • Maintaining a positive and professional attitude at all times while providing service
  • Communicating with agency project staff
  • Complying with both production and quality work standards established by NCC administration, crew supervisors, and project partners
  • Camping up to seven nights in wilderness setting without formal restroom facilities and running water
  • Contributing to basic duties at the campsite including cooking, cleaning, and organizing crew equipment
  • Show respect when interacting with other members, leaders, staff, project sponsors, and community members
  • Participate in in-field education sessions

Work Schedule:

Schedule will be dictated by project site and the distance between the field station. Many crews will be assigned to several projects throughout the season, therefore there may be a mixture of both four and eight-day tours. All schedules are subject to change due to unpredictable circumstances. Due to the seasonal nature of field work in Nevada, one may be required to relocate more than once during the term. Teams will begin service in Southern Nevada based in Las Vegas and will remain there until the end of April when they will be given the option to continue serving in the Las Vegas area or relocate to the Reno, Nevada or Ely, Nevada field stations for the summer months. The NCC will help during the transition time with housing recommendations. NCC will not provide housing nor sign leases, but can assist with identifying housing options.

Training: Members will attend orientation from August 27th to August 31st, where they will receive training in technical projects skills required to complete project tasks, leave-no-trace ethics, and CPR/First Aid.

Project Site Locations:

During the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons, possible project site locations include Spring Mountains NRA; Lake Mead NRA; Ash Meadows NWR; Desert National NWR; Moapa NWR; Death Valley National Park; and Eastern and Southern Nevada.

During the Summer season, possible project site locations include Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park; Spring Mountains NRA; Great Basin National Park; Ely, Nevada; Carson City, Nevada; and Mt. Rose Wilderness area.
