Early Education Assistant Position

Washoe County School District

Position hours: 40 hours per week

Daily Supervision By: Rechelle Murrillo

Position Summary: The AmeriCorps member will support family self-sufficiency to improve the lives of adults and children in poverty, to support school readiness for young children and to prevent child abuse and neglect. The AmeriCorps member’s responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

Primary responsibilities: tasks and duties which are fundamental and critical

  • Join staff on home visits targeting child development and parenting
  • Assist in supervision of young children in a preschool setting
  • Facilitate learning activities for children at the shelter ages 0-5
  • Facilitate after school academic mentoring in Re-engagement Center
  • Support staff in monitoring parent/child play activity

Secondary responsibilities: additional tasks and duties that are preferential but secondary

  • Provide academic support for school age children
  • Develop workshops and implement workshops for parent education
  • Maintain parent resource room

Other Responsibilities: miscellaneous tasks and duties

  • Input data and process enrollment forms
  • Classroom maintenance
  • Provide additional supervision on field trips
  • Facilitate maintenance of community garden

Required Skills or Qualifications: specific areas of knowledge or skills required to be qualified for the position

  • Knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices with young children
  • Leadership skills
  • Ability to work with parents and children on a one to one basis with support from staff
  • Education in early childhood development preferred

Benefits/Experience Gained: The Member will gain skills in working with children and families, as well as develop a knowledge base in child development. The Member will develop skills in workshop presentation as well as home visiting. The Member will gain insight into working with families and children dealing with issues of poverty. This is an AmeriCorps volunteer position, and candidates will receive a living stipend for the year. This is not an hourly wage or salary position, and is paid to members bi-weekly throughout the entire year to assist with living expenses. Upon completion of an AmeriCorps national service contract, members shall receive an additional education award in the amount of $5,550 that can be used for paying off student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college.

Outcomes: Provide early education activities to at least 15 children weekly. Provide at least 10 hours of student academic mentoring weekly.

Dress Code:

  • AmeriCorps members must always wear AmeriCorps Gear while serving. The gear is provided by the AmeriCorps Program.
  • Dress is business casual with an overall conservative appearance; jeans are acceptable as appropriate.

The member will participate in service days with The Children’s Cabinet AmeriCorps Program and other community-wide events throughout the service year. Additionally, the member will participate in regular team meetings every other Friday (at minimum) from 9 am to 12 noon at The Children’s Cabinet Family and Youth Interventions Office in Reno, NV.

Financial Educator

United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra

Position hours: 40 hours per week

Daily Supervision By: Betty Rose

Position Summary: The AmeriCorps member will work to coordinate and promote programs that support financial education and maximize income, savings, and asset building under the umbrella of the Financial Stability Partnership of Northern Nevada (FSP). The member will support FSP collaborative efforts including meeting scheduling; mail, phone, and electronic communications for the FSP; field questions about and referrals to appropriate organizations/ agencies, and a variety of tasks for the FSP subcommittees.

The AmeriCorps member’s responsibilities and activities will include, but not be limited to:

Primary responsibilities: tasks and duties that are fundamental and critical

  • Assist the Financial Education subcommittee with duties that will increase the numbers of youth receiving financial education
  • Assist the Financial Education subcommittee with duties that will increase the numbers of adults receiving financial education
  • Assist the Earned Income Tax Credit/ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (EITC/ VITA) subcommittee with recruiting efforts for free income tax preparation
  • Broker and coordinate FSP community volunteer activities and referrals to:
    • Adult financial education opportunities
    • Investor financial education
  • Broker and coordinate FSP training of case worker(s)/ case manager(s) for the FSP Train the Trainer program

Secondary responsibilities: additional tasks and duties that are preferential but secondary

  • Participate in general membership and subcommittee meetings related to FSP
  • Outreach to financial services organizations
  • Data entry and tracking

Other Responsibilities: miscellaneous tasks and duties

  • Preparation of reports
  • Other project activities as needed

Required Skills or Qualifications: specific areas of knowledge or skills required to be qualified for the position

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent desired
  • Ability to plan, organize, and evaluate the work of volunteers
  • Ability to learn and communicate about financial services that are delivered by community organizations and social service programs
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and computer skills desired
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate reports
  • Ability to establish working relationships with staff, outside organizations/ agencies, and the general public

They also gain the satisfaction of helping others attain financial education that can lead to financial stability. Dress Code: AmeriCorps members are asked to dress appropriately for the setting they are in e.g. business casual pants or skirt and an AmeriCorps shirt.

Parent Involvement Facilitator

The Children’s Cabinet

Position hours: 40 hours per week

Daily Supervision By: Freshman Dean or other designee

Position Summary: The AmeriCorps member will become part of the school truancy team, interacting closely with high school staff and a Children’s Cabinet truancy employee. Members will be key links between the home and school in supporting students identified in the 9th grade as being at risk for not completing high school. Members will be trained to implement supports designed to engage parents and build their capacity to monitor student progress.

The AmeriCorps member’s responsibilities and activities will include, but not be limited to:

Primary responsibilities: tasks and duties which are fundamental and critical

  • Contact parents of 9th grade youth deemed high risk of not graduating
  • Coach parents in the use of Infinite Campus
  • Provide information on supplementary, local resources to families
  • Attend staffings/meetings regarding youth academic and attendance progress
  • Compile data on attendance and hours spent assisting families

Secondary responsibilities: additional tasks and duties which are preferential but secondary

  • Attend AmeriCorps team meetings
  • Attend AmeriCorps service learning events 3 x year

Required Skills or Qualifications:

Pursing Bachelors degree in social services, criminal justice or similar

OR demonstrated skill in client services and/or customer support

Outcomes:

  • Number of contacts made with families quarterly
  • Number of hours toward parent/youth support
  • Change in attendance rate by grading period

This is an AmeriCorps volunteer position, and candidates will receive a living stipend for the year.
