Ways to help

Petco Lead Adoption Counselor & Manager

Petco weekend adoption events are one of the most fulfilling (and craziest) things we do at Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions (HBCA). It’s primetime for our organization to get visibility with the public and, of course, adopt out lots of cats! Busy doesn’t begin to describe the many aspects of the public, the organization, and Petco staff that need to be handled and executed for a great experience for all. We are looking for a Petco lead counselor and site manager for these weekend events. Some responsibilities include:
  • Reviewing adoption applications pre-event, matching adopters with cats/kittens, and using proper judgment to approve/deny adopters based on HBCA requirements
  • Preparing and organizing event set-up, supply delivery, event takedown
  • Working with our foster coordinator to arrange times for cats/kittens to be dropped off or picked up (if not adopted), and ensuring all paperwork is ready and available for a seamless adoption process
  • Working with our volunteer coordinator to recruit volunteers, develop roles to match event needs, and provide on-site training as needed to team members
  • Adhering to Petco rules and following COVID guidelines
  • Maintaining a polite, informative, and courteous demeanor despite sometimes overwhelming environmental circumstances
We know, it’s a lot! Yet this individual reflects our organization to the public – and helps find homes for our cats every weekend. This position is Saturday & Sunday specific, typically from 10am – 4pm (hours change depending on cat availability). All we ask is this volunteer is:
  • Fit to stand, squat, bend, twist, and lift approx. 50 lbs
  • Capable of working with diverse populations whether the public, donors, volunteers, management, or Petco staff; maintain and build upon professional relationships
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, high-stress, multi-tasking environment
  • An excellent communicator: answering questions of staff, adopters, volunteers, and expressing respectfully expectations or needs
  • Comfortable using best judgment to match adopters with cats – and declining adopters if necessary
Homeward Bound organizes dozens of weekend Petco adoption events over the course of a year – and these events send hundreds of cats and kittens to their new homes! We need someone passionate and ready to handle these events and help every deserving cat in our care find their families. Visit homewardboundcats.org to learn more about us and fill out a volunteer application!

Adoptions Counselor

There’s more that goes into an adoption than you might think! At Homeward Bound, we pride ourselves on a thorough adoption process. That means discussing with adopters the kind of cat they’re looking for and finding the right family for every cat. A great match is a job well done! We could always use some help at our front office with responsibilities that include:
  • Answering office phone, handling inquiries and questions, forwarding calls as needed
  • Managing email inbox and scheduling appointments
  • Completing adoption interviews via phone or email
  • Filling out adoption paperwork and completing associated data entry and filing
This front office shift is from 12pm to 6pm daily and we will provide 100% of the training needed for this position. All we ask is volunteers are:
  • Fit to sit, then stand, frequently throughout the day
  • Familiar with basic technology, i.e. phones, computers, printers
  • Comfortable communicating via phone and face-to-face in a friendly and professional way
Our adoption counselor is often the face (and voice) of our organization! We rely on this person to coordinate appointments, provide information to those who reach out to us, and show compassion in a variety of incredible situations. Most importantly, you will see cats go home to their families every day – the best “responsibility” we can think of. Intake & Foster Assistant

Taking in cats is a part of what we do. In fact, it’s one of the most important things any animal rescue does! This is when we check the health and temperament of every animal that comes into our care and helps us decide if they’re a good fit for the shelter or need foster care to really shine. We are looking for a volunteer to aid with our intake process and foster home communications. Some responsibilities include:
  • Reviewing foster applications and home visits (if needed)
  • Training new fosters & gathering supplies, maintaining phone/email communications
  • Prepare & send weekly medical schedule: vaccines, dewormer, S/Ns, etc. due or overdue
  • Assisting with intake process: review forms, aid with initial exam and vaccinations
  • Scanning paperwork into database, set reminders for vaccine due dates, rabies tags, etc.
Volunteers for this position are needed from Sunday to Thursday, 12pm to 6pm – though we can always work with your schedule and would still love your time, even if it’s just a few hours! We will provide 100% of the training needed for this position. All we ask is volunteers are:
  • Fit to stand, squat, bend, twist, and lift
  • Comfortable handling cats that are scared in a new environment and may need special handling
  • Able to use chemical cleaning solutions (to clean and disinfect the facility)
  • Experienced in cat handling and behaviors – or open and interested to know more!
  • Familiar with basic technology, i.e. phones, computers, printers
At our facility, we often have a revolving door of kitties coming and going (which is a great thing!) and need extra hands to help us efficiently examine our cats, get them where they need to be, and help our foster families care for our animals. Visit homewardboundcats.org to learn more about us and fill out a volunteer application!

Petco Adoption Event Team Member

At Homeward Bound, our weekend Petco adoption events are a time of lots of joy – and lots of craziness! In the span of just a few hours over one or two days, during our busy season, we see literally dozens of cats and kittens go home to their forever families. That’s a lot of adoptions! These events call for level-headed, multi-tasking, people-savvy superstars to keep adopters on the right track, help out with what our Petco event lead needs, and of course, keep our kitties comfortable while they wait. We are looking for a handful of volunteers to help out with these weekend fun days! Volunteers are needed to:
  • Arrive before or after the event to set-up and/or breakdown tables, kennels, seating, etc.
  • Aid with checking in adopters as they arrive for their appointments, according to event protocol and priority
  • Help with filling out paperwork, organizing adoption folders (with needed handouts, vaccine records, etc.), assisting with adoption counseling as needed
  • Keeping our patient cats company; ensure they have blankets, water, food, etc. to stay comfy while they eye their future family
These weekend events typically run from 10:30am – 4:30pm (or earlier, if all our kitties are adopted before then!) on Saturday and Sunday (or just Saturday if, again, all our cats are adopted). Volunteers are not expected to work the entire event and we’ll gladly take any time you can spare before, during, or after! All we ask is volunteers are:
  • Fit to stand, squat, bend, twist, and lift approx. 50 lbs (to set-up/breakdown)
  • Comfortable in forward-facing, person-to-person interactions; there are lots of people here!
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, high-stress, multi-tasking environment
Our weekend events are a crazy time – but fulfilling. Every weekend you'll make happy families for humans and felines! Homeward Bound puts hundreds of cats with their people each year at these events, and we’d love for you to join us. About us Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions (Homeward Bound) is a smaller, cat-only rescue organization that provides an essential safety net to vulnerable cats in the greater Las Vegas Valley (population 2.2 million). Founded in 2007, we have been primarily foster-based until 2019, when we moved into a 2,400 square foot adoption center allowing us to provide care for more cats, enhance public visitation and increase the number of adoptions. We work with families who need to rehome their cats, and TNR groups to find homes for kittens and friendly adults that might otherwise be returned to the streets. We also help domesticated community cats who have likely been abandoned outside or turned into shelters as strays and released on the street to avoid unnecessary euthanasia. For nearly 12 years, we have been a sustainable, small organization, relying almost entirely on volunteers to fulfill our mission. In 2019, we were able to open an adoption center, increasing our capacity for care and adoptions. We designed a modern, free-roaming center where both cats and people can relax in a home-like environment that is more comfortable than a typical shelter. We provide a greater opportunity to match the right cat with the right family and offer lifetime support through our Cat Help Desk, a resource center for adopters and anyone seeking help to make the right decisions on behalf of cats.
