Our board | Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada is part of the national network of JA USA. The goals of JASN is to educate students in K-12 grades in the life skills of workforce readiness, financial literacy, and entrepurnership. Through partnership with schools, teachers, and other non-profit organizations; programs are delivered directly to students through the JASN volunteers who are trained and placed in the classroom.The Board of Directors for Junior Achievement is responsible for overseeing the mission and purpose of the organization. Its duties include participation in strategic planning and making policy decisions, then securing the financing of them and the monitoring of their execution. The board also presents the JASN image to the community and solicits its support in achieving its goals. |

Requirements | Board of Director Individual Responsibilities Directors should be willing and able to commit and secure financial and volunteer resources to support the purpose of JASN, which is: Junior Achievement will inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. Specific areas of participation include but are not limited to:Area Evidence of Fulfillment Attendance Attend at least 75% of Board meetings and as many other events as possible.Participation Actively participate in at least one Board committee. Be accessible, available and responsive to the JASN Board chair, president and staff.Governance Participate in the establishment and monitoring of the policies and strategic direction for the organization.Funding Provide the following financial resources to allow the organization to fulfill its strategic objectives: • a personal contribution (average annual gift typically $1,000-$1,500) • monetary or in-kind contributions from your company totaling at least $5,000 annually • contributions from other organizations • supporting JASN special events • annual Board Dues of $250 (separate from personal contribution)*Volunteers Provide opportunities for employees of your company to volunteer. Secure volunteer opportunities from other companies and organizations personally. Teach or visit at least one class every year.Advocacy List JASN on personal and professional bios. Promote JASN through own communication avenues. Promote JASN in public forums.Engagement Stay informed about general board and committee matters. Prepare well for all meetings, review and comment on minutes and reports, be actively engaged at each board and committee meeting. Term Three-year term renewable up to 3 times with required 1 year off following maximum terms served.Legal Duties Ensure your Duty of Care, Duty of Loyalty, and Duty of Obedience.1 *Explanation of Board Dues-Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada annually requires board members to pay $250 in board dues. These dues cover the following items for the board member. Monthly meeting food and drinks, Suite Holidays Ticket (1) for board member who volunteer, Past President Celebration Dinner every 2 years seats for Board member and their guest, Volunteer Appreciation Lunch at Fogo, Board Socials such as Holiday Party and other celebrations as set by President and Chairman1 The Duty of Care, Duty of Loyalty and Duty of Obedience are legal terms which describe a Director’s responsibilities as follows: Duty of Care: The level of competence that is expected of a board member, commonly expressed as the duty of "care that an ordinarily prudent person would exercise in a like position and under similar circumstances" means a board member owes the duty to exercise reasonable care when he or she makes a decision as a steward of the organization. Duty of Loyalty. A standard of faithfulness; a board member must give undivided allegiance when making decisions affecting the organization. This means a board member can never use information obtained as a member for personal gain, but must act in the best interests of the organization. Duty of Obedience. This duty requires board members to be faithful to the organization's mission. They are not permitted to act in a way that is inconsistent with the central goals of the organization. A basis for this rule lies in the public's trust that the organization will manage donated funds to fulfill the organization's mission. |

On-boarding | All prospective members must meet with the President & CEO and fill out an application plus bio. Members of the JASN Board Governance Committee will review the applicant and if it is a good fit will setup an interview. After the interview the committee will make a recommendation to the full board on the candidate. The whole process can take between 1 to 3 months depending on timing.We look for board members who represent diverse backgrounds and industries. Bother are just as important as the other to our mix. |
