Nevadans Unite in Service for the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance
SPARKS/LAS VEGAS, September 10, 2015 —Community volunteers and AmeriCorps members will step up in service to mark the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks for the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance. Participants will help to revitalize a neighborhood in Las Vegas and remove invasive weeds from a heavily used park in Sparks, joining hundreds of thousands of Americans across the country in volunteer service.
“September 11th is a day of history, emotion, and reflection,” said Amber Martin-Jahn, the Executive Director of Nevada Volunteers. “For many Americans it is also a day of service that provides an opportunity to join neighbors and local leaders to rekindle the compassion and unity shown on that day.”
September 11th was designated a national day of service by the 2009 Kennedy Serve America Act. The Corporation for National and Community Service leads the annual event, working with MyGoodDeed and hundreds of nonprofit groups, faith-based organizations, and schools and businesses nationwide.
In Sparks participants will tackle a major invasive species removal project along the Regional Bike path on the east side of the Golden Eagle Regional Park. This project, in partnership with the City of Sparks and the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation was identified as a major need in the area and will help to make the path more enjoyable and accessible to all.
In Las Vegas participants will help to revitalize a neighborhood by removing debris and invasive plants from a site that is slated to become a community park in the near future. Teams will also be painting curbs in the area to designate fire zones. This service project will help pave the way to ensure residents of this neighborhood have access to important resources such as parks.
