Nevada AmeriCorps Program Highlights 2008-2009

What’s AmeriCorps Doing for Nevada?

Nevada Volunteers awarded 5 AmeriCorps Program Grants and 1 AmeriCorps Recovery and Reinvestment Act Grant supporting national service activities for 229 AmeriCorps members statewide.

Nevada Volunteers managed more than $1,541,199.00 of federal AmeriCorps dollars.

Nevada AmeriCorps Members provided 194,958 hours of service in the core areas of education, human needs, environment and public safety.

At $20.25 per hour (the value of a volunteer hour set by Bureau of Labor Statistics), Nevada’s AmeriCorps Members’ 194,958 hours of service is worth $3,947,899.50.

AmeriCorps Members recruited and managed 5,251 volunteers throughout the state.
These volunteers donated more than 69,883 hours of community service valued at $1,415,130.70.

Our 5 Nevada programs received 1,779 AmeriCorps applications.

Nevada AmeriCorps Members completed comprehensive PreService Orientation and participated in 10 hours of civic engagement training as well as First Aid and CPR certification. Members from each program were selected to participate in volunteer management training and then served as their program’s volunteer coordinator for the year.

164 Great Basin Institute’s Nevada Conservation Corps AmeriCorps Members

  • provided environmental restoration and conservation services statewide
  • supported 32 environmental research internships
  • removed invasive species from 3,947 acres statewide
  • built and/or removed 50.25 miles of fence
  • planted 6,640 plants and trees
  • removed hazardous fuels from 653 acres of public land
  • restored 15 miles of rivers, streams, beaches and fish habitats
  • built/maintained/decommissioned 197 miles of wilderness trails
  • 100% of project partners were very satisfied with crew service quality
  • provided Summer of Service opportunities for 9 college-bound youth
  • 6 special community service projects were completed
  • engaged 729 students in environmental education programs
  • recruited 1,286 volunteers who donated more than 35,000 hours of service
  • collaborated with Nevada State Parks, US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Nevada Divisions of Fish and Wildlife Service, Cooperative Extension, Nevada EcoNet, Dayton Valley Conservation District, The Nature Conservancy, Washoe County Truckee River Flood Project, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, University of California Irvine, Tahoe Rim Trail Association, City of Henderson, Washoe County Parks Department, Northwestern University, Las Vegas Springs Preserve, University of Nevada, Reno and Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association
  • 17 new partnerships were created to build capacity and sustainability

12 Nevada Outdoor School AmeriCorps Members

  • 97 students participated in service learning projects
  • 81% of the students indicated an interest in volunteering again
  • 64% actually returned to volunteer again
  • coordinated 26 environmental/conservation field trips for 496 students
  • provided 20 youth with structured after-school service learning programs
  • received a $27,445 service learning grant from State Farm Insurance
  • conducted Red Cross First Aid/CPR classes for 3,543 persons
  • provided over 1700 hours of wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and research
  • completed 384 hospice patient contacts
  • helped 190 persons prepare for GED tests
  • provided 379 children with summer camp activities
  • distributed 24,111 educational brochures about the Black Rock Desert
  • engaged 579 volunteers who donated 3,686 hours of service
  • sponsored 3 special community service projects
  • collaborated with American Red Cross, Bureau of Land Management, City of Winnemucca, First Way Pregnancy Center, Friends of Nevada Wilderness, Friends of Black Rock High Rock, Great Basin College, Humboldt Volunteer Hospice, Humboldt County School District, JOIN, RESPECT, Safe Haven Zoo, Sierra Nevada Journeys, Winnemucca Community Garden, Winnemucca Domestic Violence Shelter, Winnemucca Food Bank, Winnemucca Ministerial Association
  • created 9 new partnerships to build capacity and sustainability

14 Parasol Community Foundation AmeriCorps Members

  • created 3 new programs for 2,803 senior citizens
  • collected and distributed 76,050 pounds of food to 14,160 people
  • conducted Emergency Preparedness Certification for 90 people
  • conducted Children’s Babysitting Safety classes for 412 teens
  • conducted 111 healthy nutrition information programs for 1,622 people
  • gave 181 environmental education workshops for 10,872 participants
  • provided 29 women and children with domestic violence intervention
  • facilitated 12 support groups for 83 child victims of domestic assault
  • completed 30 Lake Tahoe water quality tests
  • provided 136 youngsters with after-school homework help and recreation
  • created 131 presentations for after-school program students
  • provided 122 early childhood education classes for 31 at-risk children
  • 100% showed improvement on homework assignments
  • 83% attained grade level in reading
  • sponsored 6 special community service projects
  • engaged 1,268 volunteers who donated 10,599 hours of service
  • collaborated with Adventure Risk Challenge, American Association of Women, American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada, Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe, California Fish and Game, Children’s Cabinet at Incline Village, City of Reno, Diamond Peak Ski Lodge, Dress the Part(y), EXL Media, FUZE, Great Basin Outdoor Schools, Great Basin Institute’s Nevada Conservation Corps, Incline Village General Improvement District, Inner Rhythms Dance Group, Lake Tahoe School, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Nancy Crowell Yoga, National Resources Conservation Association, Nevada Area Council Boy Scouts, Nevada Geriatric Education Center, North Lake Tahoe Bonanza, North Lake Tahoe Fire Department, Parasol Community Collaboration, Project MANA, Red, White and Tahoe Blue, Reno Aces, Rotary Club of Incline Village, Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps, Sierra Nevada College, Sierra Nevada Journeys, Sierra Recovery Center, Sierra Watershed Education Partnership, Space Science for Schools, St. Francis of Assisi Church, Starbucks Coffee, Tahoe Chamber Music Society, Tahoe Children’s Foundation, Tahoe Environmental Research Center, Tahoe Rim Trail Association, Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, Tahoe Women’s Services, Truckee Humane Society, University of California at Davis, United Blood Services, Washoe County Schools, Washoe County Senior Services, Weber and Associates, Xiu Lian School of Martial Arts.

28 U.S. VETS- Las Vegas AmeriCorps Members

  • provided outreach to 1,894 homeless persons in Southern Nevada
  • 356 were homeless 12-18 year old adolescents
  • 427 received services through Central Christian Church in Henderson
  • conducted intake assessments and clinical support services - case management, substance abuse treatment, life skills support, transportation, meal services and residential assistance for 245 new veterans
  • 95% of homeless veterans who received clinical support services remained stable in residency for one year
  • 67% of homeless veterans who received clinical support services successfully transitioned to or maintained permanent housing
  • provided employment assistance services for 451 homeless veterans
  • 61% of homeless veterans who received employment assistance obtained full time employment
  • provided 1,030 persons with crisis intervention/emergency relief services
  • 5 AmeriCorps members were hired for full-time employment immediately upon the successful completion of their service
  • engaged 795 volunteers who donated more than 5,000 hours of service
  • sponsored 9 special community service projects
  • collaborated with Central Christian Church, Family Promise, HELP of Southern Nevada, New Horizons Academy, Redeemer Lutheran Church and Street Teens
  • created 2 new partnership to build capacity and sustainability

20 United Way of Southern Nevada AmeriCorps Members

  • 5,500 students received human services information and referrals
  • 758 children were mentored and/or tutored filled 25,686 backpacks with food
  • 3,700 students were provided backpacks at 144 elementary schools
  • provided translation/interpretation services for 994 persons
  • implemented conflict resolution, drug prevention, HIV preventionand /or gang awareness training for 140 students
  • 344 preK children received early intervention educational services
  • 92.1% of parents indicated increased quality time with their children
  • 82% of children improved expressive reading readiness skills
  • 94% of children improved auditory reading readiness skills
  • conducted 92 client intakes. 40 people benefitted from social services
  • provided 47 employment readiness training courses for 114 participants
  • conducted 13 health/safety courses. 21 persons were First Aid/CPR certified
  • 42 at-risk pregnant teens participated in Baby First services
  • engaged 1.072 attorneys in pro bono legal services
  • provided 36 at-risk youth with summer camp activities
  • developed and implemented a summer leadership internship program for 9 students
  • engaged 1,821 volunteers who donated more than 5,600 hours of service
  • implemented 6 special community service projects
  • collaborated with American Red Cross, Baby First Services, Clark County School District, Communities in Schools, Desert Rose Adult High School, Foundation for Independent Tomorrow (FIT), HELP of Southern NV, Legal Aid Center of Southern NV, Luz Community Development Coalition, Nye County School District, Three Square Food Bank, United Labor Agency of Nevada (ULAN), U.S. VETS-Las Vegas, UNLV’s Center for Academic Enrichment and the Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada.
